I read somewhere that butterflies were part of the decomposition process, finishing off the liquid remnants of dead animals before the dry stages of decomposition. I found the idea of such a beautiful insect participating in such a macabre ritual fascinating, and I wanted to depict this beautiful, yet grotesque portion of the circle of life with this painting. I incorporated thread between the butterflies and bones to represent the continuous thread of life and death that binds us all together.
